Who was in The Pearl?

Remember the thing that looked a lot like a cigarette that was lying on a table in The Pearl in the question mark episode?

In this podcast Damon stated the following:

It was a cigarette.. that was still burning…

The question is – who left a burning cigarette behind in The Pearl? I feel that this is a pretty clear indication that someone was there just minutes before Locke and Eko entered.

What are your thoughts?

Whoever it was, they must have known how to exit the station through what may be the tunnels which were X’d out on the blast door map. The cigarette could be a symbol for the smoke monster…

Maybe the cigarette is the smoke monster and it sleeps on a bed of tobacco.

  2. Job says:

    Could it be “Him”?

    I’m only half-joking, by the way. 🙂

i think this whole thing is a scientist experiment. i will be dissapointed if it is. how was charlie and claire( cute)

Interesting… have you ever thought about the meaning behind the name of this particular DHARMA Initiative station “The Pearl”.
    ———————-
In Christian mysticism, or gnostic text, The Apocryphal Acts of Thomas/The Gospel of Thomas… (aka Judus Thomas… not to be confused with the Judus that betrayed Jesus)… there is a something called “The Hymn of the Pearl” also called “The Hymn of the Soul”. This text tells of a story of “the son of the king of kings”, who is sent to Egypt to retrieve a pearl from a snake/serpent. While on this quest, the son of the king of kings is seduced by the Egyptians and forgets his origin, his family, and the purpose for his quest. However, a letter is sent from the king of kings that reminds him of his past. When the son of the king of kings reads his letter, he remembers his mission. He then snatches the pearl and returns home.

This ‘hymn’ is interpreted as a Gnostic view of the human condition, “we are lost in a world of matter and do not remember our true origin, but God sends a message, by way of Jesus, to make us remember through gnosis”.

I don’t know if this has anything to do with this station… but I believe it may provide clues to who may have occupied this station or why this station was discovered, and why Eko comes to the conclusion that “The reason to do it, push the button, is not because we are told to do so in the film… We do it because we believe we are meant to.”

Do anybody know if there is a seson nr 3? I have seen episode 22 and still waiting for the last in seson 2.

  6. Locke2 says:

From everything I’ve read and seen, the cigarette was NOT burning. Why did no one notice that before they mentioned it in their podcast? Either they did a poor job setting that up, or they didn’t actually leave one burning, but were supposed to do it.

Considering the number of people who listen to their podcast compared to the number of people who watch the show, most viewers will never know it was supposed to be burning, nor will they consider the implications of it (Where did the person flee? Where’s the secret exit? Who is the smoker? Who was watching the swan hatch?)

Haha, by this point I wouldn’t be surprised.

Very interesting, I wonder if this is a conscious connection by the writers.

Yes, there will be a third season of Lost.

I didn’t think it was burning either before I heard Damon say it in the podcast, but since he said so, I would belive that it has some significance.

They might have wanted us to see that it was burning but for some reason it doesn’t look like that on TV. Remember when they told us to look out for the Widmore sign and nobody could make out what the sign said even on HDTV due to the camera focusing on the foreground.

  8. smiley says:

i didnt really notice the cigarette, but i was concentrating on what that other stuff on the table was. brown chunks of something, looked like it had just been cut, along with what looks like white powder of some sort. what is that!??!

  9. Greg says:

Whoever it was, it wasn’t one of The Others; they clearly did not know what was going on in the Hatch, since they didn’t know that Henry had been captured until Jack and Kate showed up (when Mrs. Cleo says, “Things have changed…”). So it must be…someone else.

  10. Steve says:

    Desmond? Danielle?

  11. jimseas says:

A nice post but virtually impossible to answer at this point.

If I recall correctly (and often I don’t) the only person we’ve seen smoke is Sawyer. So now you can stick that in your pipe and well – you get the idea.

Danielle would probably be a rule out unless: 1. she is getting resupplied (possible) 2. she likes stale cigs.

Desmond is a “could be” but doesn’t fit his athletic profile. Unless that is fake of course.

None of the Others that we have seen smoke that I can recall.

I would also agree that if this is the case (a smoking cig) it should have been done better. Wouldn’t Locke and Eko have noticed the smell of a still-burning cig in a locked-up hatch? It would seem impossible for them not to react to the smell even if they didn’t see it.

The brown chunks and the powder definitely looks it was taken directly from the virgins statuettes…

  13. Julie says:

Maybe this sounds bad.. but honestly I thought that it was a marijuana joint that had been put out. I’m not sure why I thought this other than he fact that supposedly this all went down in the 70s and it appeared that there was cut heroin all over the place. Anyone else?

  14. Christine T says:

Hello everyone!!!! Dont you realize that the plane which carried all of that heroin in located on top of that hatch!!!! Which means one of 2 things either
    1. The person who occupied the hatch was there when the plane crashed and took some of it, or
    2. A person from the plane that crashed was occupying it for a while.
Is there a survivor from yemi’s plane?

Who knows, but I bet they are very angry that all the heroin was taken, and/or burned by the survivors……..

  15. Tasha says:

I think they knew Henry had been captured. They told Micheal that before Kate and Jack showed up and found Micheal.

I thought it was a joint as well. It doesn’t look like a cigg. So this is a little confusing. Is it supposed to be a burning ciggerette because like someone said you would THINK they would have smelled it???

  16. Lesley says:

In the Pearl Orientation video you can see the smoke rising from the arm side of the chair. It appears to be coming from a lit cig. Perhaps Dr. Candle/Wickmund just finished taping when they showed up. Hmmmm, there is that time thing again. I still think there is some sort of time travel happening. Back to work…can’t wait for tonite.

  17. Adam says:

Regarding the heroin, if the person inside the pearl had some then he knew the plane had crashed into the trees and had some “need” for it.

So perhaps the plane didn’t crash off course, maybe it was supposed to be making the delivery to this island?

  18. Tasha says:

    Maybe

I am new to this blog sorta and I don’t know if anybody mentioned it…but wasn’t that Pearl episode really kinda RINGISH…sorta like the girl on the website? That one girl was crazy looking. At the beginning there was that weird flashback like the video in “The Ring”, There even was that weird tree that was in the movie the Ring and the tree was on this island. Then the Ring that Eko saw on the ground? Also that girl had drowned like the girl in The Ring? Could there be some connection here??

I haven’t seen the ring, but I know that the writers throw in subtle references to all kinds of movies they like so it wouldn’t be surprising if they where a bit inspired by The Ring, but I have no idea if we should see these kind of connections as some kind of clue to the overall mystery.

  20. Julie says:

I dont remember anything ‘ringish’ and that movies scares the living crap out of me.. so I would have thought that I would have picked up on that. Anyhow… sitting here running my mouth to co-workers about Lost (they just dont get it… then again I am the only person in the office under 50) it occured to me that maybe it was Desmond in the Pearl Station.
We can assume that he wasn’t able to leave the island seeing as how no one else has been able to do so.
He would obviously had time to scour the island and find the Pearl Station.. may have even noticed the cameras in the Swan station and decided to find out where they fed to. If infact the joint/cigarette was burning.. is it possible that Desmond was watching and took off when he saw Echo & Locke approaching?
I mean, we only got to see what came up on one monitor… there were how many? 12?
Another thing….. the cut heroin in the Pearl Hatch.. wouldn’t Desmond have heard that plane crash?

  21. Lesley says:

Don’t worry Julie there are some of us out here who get it and we are 50! I think that being into LOST is a state of mind (or out of one’s mind). None of the younger people in my office get it so who knows! I think the Others are using the various hatches for their own devices. It could be any one of them.

  22. the ac kid says:

    is it the snow globe?

  23. Bobbi says:

I like the theory that perhaps Sawyer was in the Pearl. Afterall, we know he had a stash of the heroin. And he did recently take more control, perhaps he’d been watching Jack and them in the other hatch and plotting how to take control.

  24. best casino says:

Got here and seen your stuff – way to go!

  25. Greetings from France. This is a nice blog. I’m wondering if you have any advice about staying out of the friend zone with women? I’m really tired of women telling me they just want to be friends. Maybe I’m being too much of a nice guy?
